Khalid Choukri

Founder and CEO, Evaluations and Language Resources Distribution Agency (ELDA); General Manager, Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC)

Dr. Khalid Choukri is a Franco-Moroccan expert in language technologies and a key figure in the international NLP community. He has been the Secretary General of the European Language Resources Association (ELRA) and the Founder and CEO of the Evaluations and Language Resources Distribution Agency (ELDA) since 1995.

He holds an engineering degree in Electrical Engineering (ENAC, Toulouse) and a Master’s and PhD in Computer Science and Signal Processing from Télécom Paris.

With over 30 years of experience, his work focuses on spoken, written, and multimodal language technologies, particularly in multilingual and multicultural contexts, bridging academia and industry. He has been involved in nearly one hundred language resource collection projects worldwide, contributing to the creation, evaluation, and distribution of essential datasets for research and industry.

Dr. Choukri has played a central role in the development of language technology infrastructures, standards, and international initiatives, and he served as Chair of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 35 (User Interfaces) for over 10 years. He has also been a key manager of numerous projects related to Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, and Arabic language technologies. In this context, he notably co-managed major projects such as NEMLAR and MEDAR, which contributed to advancing Arabic NLP and AI resources and technologies.

He was among the founders of the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC) in 1998 and continues to act as its General Manager, contributing to its development as a leading international event in the field. He is currently involved in major European initiatives related to Large Language Models (LLMs), helping shape the future of multilingual AI in Europe and beyond.
