The Access to Knowledge for Development Center Joins Global Initiative on Beneficial AI for Children

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming societies, presenting unique challenges and opportunities - particularly for children. During their formative years, children are undergoing profound changes. They are not only acquiring knowledge but also shaping their understanding of the world through interactions with their environment.  Within this context, AI holds significant potential - it can either enhance development, notably through innovative educational tools, or pose risks by reshaping the experiences that influence how children engage with society.

Recognizing  the urgency of ensuring AI benefits young generations, the Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D) at the American University in Cairo’s Onsi Sawiris School of Business is proud to announce its participation in the newly launched international multi-stakeholder coalition, “Beneficial AI for Children,” launched by everyone.ai and the Paris Peace Forum during the AI Action Summit in Paris on February 10-11, 2025. In joining this coalition, A2K4D is committed to supporting efforts to establish practical, evidence-based guidelines aimed at safeguarding and promoting children’s cognitive and socio-emotional well-being in the AI age.

Although still in its early stages, the “Beneficial AI for Children” coalition has already attracted significant global interest in a testament to its goal to foster inclusive and interdisciplinary dialogues between governments, institutions, tech companies, investors, researchers, educators. Major technology firms such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic have pledged their support, alongside government representatives from countries including France, Chile, Senegal and Togo. Additionally, several leading NGOs, foundations, and civil society organizations —including the McGovern Foundation, AI4Good, ICMEC, and The Future Society—are actively engaged, with UNICEF and UNESCO closely involved in shaping the coalition’s direction. This community of support is still growing.

As AI continues to evolve, it is imperative to ensure that children’s well-being remains at the forefront of policy and innovation. Through this coalition, A2K4D is committed to working collaboratively with global partners to advocate for responsible AI practices that empower children and foster an inclusive digital ecosystem serving as a force for good for global youth.
